For this assignment we were asked to research and contemplate aspects that shape the ever changing interior architecture profession. Surprisingly, I thoroughly enjoyed the research part of this paper. I looked on many design websites and not only found lots of information for the paper, but also found many useful websites for inspiration and simply being more in touch with what is current in the design world. For the paper I focused on the "green movement" and discussed the truth behind that along with the functionality of firms. How they network and shares ideas and projects.

I learned a lot from this paper and really enjoyed researching the profession I am about to enter. Maybe it will inspire me to research for fun!

I really enjoyed creating my portfolio for this assignment. I had fun going through my previous projects, and also enjoyed putting the layout together. Throughout my time in IARC I have learned that I typically don't enjoy computer work unless I am using photoshop or illustrator and since I used both for this assignment, I found it quite enjoyable. The thing I struggled with the most was trying to create at logo. It was hard for me to choose a style, colors, and a direction because I feel that my mind changes too often to "brand" myself. I chose something I like that is simple, but I am still struggling trying to decide if it is something I will keep for a while. Also, although I really enjoy doing the layouts, I am not 100% sold and happy with all of them. It was hard to keep it uniform, while making everything fit. I think making 2 or 3 more templates would serve me well, so that options could be used.

Looking back on this, I see improvements that need to be made, but I am happy with the outcome.

for this assignment we were to develop a proposal for a final portfolio and resume. it was interesting to look back on my work from the past four years and see how it has evolved and decide what should be included. it is also a bit intimidating putting this together and thinking about applying for jobs. It is also a liberating feeling knowing this is the first step towards a design career. I am excited to see what will come of it.

In considering the design of a place to bathe, I looked at the Japanese bathing culture, and found that it is very different from that of which I am used to. There are three particular characteristics of their bathing culture that stood out to me. The first main difference is that they always cleanse themselves before entering the tub to soak and bathe. Secondly, their baths are typically very hot, and third, it is very normal to have communal baths. More often these are divided between the sexes, but it would not be out of the ordinary to have a combined bathe.
In my bath I intended to capture the Japanese style through materials and techniques. This pool area is attached to a facility that would fulfill cleansing, changing, and restroom obligations. Everything is complacent with the ADA disability standards, and if fully accessible to any and everyone.
My design consists of two pools connected by a series of level changes and flowing water. Three of the four walls are glass curtain walls to bring in natural light and create a very open, light and airy feel. The floor of the lower pool is river rock tiles, and the recessed ceiling is covered with bamboo stalks, both used to create texture and a more natural feel. The use of flowing water will create a more relaxing environment by creating a soothing background noise, and creating opportunity for water massage.
The water depth in the upper pool is two feet at the deepest point, allowing disabled people to easily navigate the pool on their own and with the freedom of no wheelchair.

what is a bathe? and what does it mean to bathe? we shall see.

The term misogi is used to describe bathing in Japan and means the ritual purification with water. It cleanses not only the mind and body, but also the kokoro, a persons spirit or heart. Bathing in the Japanese culture is very important. It is also very different from the American bath. Unlike Americans that fill up a hot tub and jump right in, the Japanese do the cleansing prior to soaking in an always, very hot tub. Typically a bucket of water is used to wash and cleanse the body, then a clean tub is used for soaking and relaxation.
It is also common to have mixed bathing, or see children bathing with their parents. This has caused some controversy because of the image it portrays, and at one time was banned in Japan. But, today it is often still seen. Sometimes this is done in complete nudity, or for those whom are more modest a towel or loincloth is used.

my design manifesto is about creating something interesting and dynamic from something ordinary. i believe this shows that you can create design from anything, and create anything through design. my object was created from two recycled bottles, 1/4 in thick piece of foamcore, and strips of vellum. i chose to use three ways of connecting the objects; i used adhesive, one T pin, and the shapes of the objects to hold themselves together.

computers IN design

When looking at the role of computers in design it is clear to see that this role has changed drastically. As technology has improved over time, computers have had a growing role in the design world. I think this issue has its advantages, but also has some disadvantages. I think that computers aid the design world by making it possible and much easier to design things that are very complex structurally. They create an engineering process that is much simpler. Instead of a person physically working out the mathematics of a design problem, it is instead plugged into the computer program where a formula is used to figure out the design solution for you. This is good because it enables us to create objects that would otherwise be entirely too difficult for us design. Our options become virtually limitless. Consequently, parts of the design process are lost, along with some aspects of creativity. You become limited to the shapes and colors of the design program, and can be influenced by choosing from a predetermined template. I believe this can cause things to become more streamlined and less original. Also, I think it can take away from your involvement and knowledge of the design. The computer temporarily takes the place of your brain. It does the work for you, possibly causing you not to know exactly how or why something works structurally. This can also be very beneficial. It cuts the design time and enables a quicker and smoother transfer of information among everyone involved in the design process.
As for the future of computer-aided design, I believe they will only become a larger part of the design process. I fear that if you are not fully equipped with the skills needed to use the programs, you will not make it in the design world. It is also possible that the programs will either become so technologically advanced that we would no longer understand or be able to use the programs to their full potential. Or, the technology will eventually reach a plateau and come to a point where it can be advanced no further and still be beneficial to the design world.

This is my design for our final SHELTER : BUS proposal. It is designed to be used by four relief workers at one time. It is not a mobile home because it is not functional while moving. The bus would be driven from location to location. It would be stationed for a period of time then move to another location for four more relief workers to enjoy the space. The bathtub/ shower area slides out the back of the bus, and has a glass ceiling for lighting and relaxation while enjoying the view of the sky above. The dining/ lounge area also moves out to allow for more space.

PRODUCTS

For this part of the assignment I worked on the products we could use to spread the word for Community By Design and what we are doing as a studio class this semester. The first product is an umbrella. We decided on this for a product because we thought it would be something people would actually use. We chose green for the outside in hopes that it would stand out in a crowd of umbrellas, and eventually become easily recognizable as the IARC umbrella. We also decided to make the inside/underneath look like the world to add an unexpected element of surprise and interest.

We had a very similar concept for the tote bag. We thought it would be marketable, very useful, and would promote sustainability. Our hopes would be that this would replace paper and plastic shopping bags. It would be reversible, and have the same print as the umbrella.

Our last product is soap. We thought it would be another thing people would use, and would probably be very unexpected. This is also the reason we made it black. The color choice would cause people to take a second look at it, and hopefully spark a curiosity that would lead them to become involved in our endeavors.

We chose to take a different approach to the "place" aspect of this charrette. We wanted to created mass interest while clearly informing the community, both the bus riders and non bus riders about us. Thus we have "Ode to Christo and Jeanne-Claude". Our local version of a wrapped building or physical art. We felt that by doing this living art installation the viewers would not only get a shocking experience but they would be forced to look at the good old Greensboro Bus Depot and it's surrounding environment with "new" eyes. The ultimate goal would be to energize and excite the community to find out more about Community by Design and what we are trying to accomplish through design. The installation would only last for a few days but it would be long enough to make a great impact on the community.
It was also decided that the surrounding bus shelters be wrapped in a bright green with the same graphic wording - Gatewoods Gateway to the Gate City and our web address. It's our hope that it would allow people who wouldn't necessarily travel to the main depot to see and experience what we are doing, and again hoping to stir a natural interest in the project.

BUS : SHELTER interview

My second encounter with the GTA bus system was drastically different from the first. My mission was to spark up conversation with another passenger in hopes of recording a video interview.
This plan was immediately tossed out when I was approached by a very kind African American young lady. "Excuse me, are you guys riding to the mall?" she asked. (we being Tiffany Garber and myself.) We responded "well, we aren't actually going there, but yes, this route goes to the mall." She looked a little confused so I jumped at this opportunity to futher engage in conversation. We proceded to inform her that we were IARC students doing a project on the design of a bus shelter, and asked if she would mind answering a few questions. Her responses were very positive about GTA, something that contrasted our other interviews. Throughout the converstation she informed us that GTA is "safer here than at home (Durham, NC)". To her the bus drivers and employees of GTA were very paitient. With some humor she stated that, "I called four times today and the women said 'theres this stop at this time, and this stop at this time.' She was paitent and I really appreiciate that." This statement made me realize how large the effect of out actions is on other people, and how a simple smile can go a long way.
Also during our conversation the young women talked about how she would like to see more trash can and recycling bins, more informational signs would be helpful, and definitely a bench or shelter to sit on/under.
This to me is the simple truth that what we are attempting to accomplish this semseter IS important and will be noticed. We CAN make a difference.

This experience was very unexpected and unpredictable for me. I began the assignment by riding the bus, and that was quite the adventure.

I intended to ride to Friendly Center and have an enjoyable afternoon shopping, but instead I spent my entire afternoon (3:00 until 6:00) learning about the GTA bus system. We ended up riding route 9 on Summit Ave for the entire route, which lasted for aproximately and hour and a half. Way way way too long to be on a city bus, but something I am very glad happened because it definitely changed my entire experience.

I noticed immediately that my riding partner, Tiffany Garber, and I were definitely the minority, with the majority of people being African American. I was thankful for this because after completing the reading, I felt like I could connect much more with the students involved in the sit-ins. I think it gave me a much more realistic perspective of what they went through and how they must have felt.
Another thing I found very interesting after I read was the idea of how hard and long African Americans fought for equal rights on the bus systems, and today, they are the ones who predominately use the buses. It's interesting to see how the white population of those days were so opposed to something as simple as sharing a bus, and now Whites barely use the bus system.
Something that stood out to me in the reading was where it talked about being a part of a situation, and physically "sitting" there, as opposed to hearing or reading about it. It brought to my attention the difference it really makes. I would have never known how it actually felt, and the true reality of riding the GTA bus if I had not physically sat there and rode the bus. I would have lived on with my common misconception of the reality.
I learned a lot from this experience. First of all I know I have nothing to be scared of, although I will always be cautious. I learned that if you unfamiliar with something the only way to become familiar is to try it yourself. I realized how important public transportation is to so many people, and how much they rely on it for their everyday life. I also learned that you should never be in a rush when using the GTA.

This first week has been very interesting. I can't say that I am thrilled about all the group work that will come this year, but I am ready for the challenge and I am very curious and excited to see how it goes. I know that I am going to miss the experimental, "mother cluster" projects from first year, but I am excited to use what I have learned in the new experiences that will come my way. I have a feeling things will be very different this year and I haven't figured out if that is a good or a bad thing yet. Hopefully it will be great though!

As our final project in Suzanne's class this semester, we spent several days in downtown Greensboro at Elsewhere. There is really no way to describe Elsewhere because it is truly a one of a kind place. This problem is exactly why we were there, and provided for a perfect assignment: map out the space, and create a sense of how it feels to be there. We each neon-taped off an area to map out and the process began.

After spending some time observing our spaces, we each created a list from memory of everything we saw. Above is my list of items, and below are two images I also observed. This exercise was done to see how things stood out in our memory.

This is the map I created to represent my space at Elsewhere. I decided to make one image of the entire space. I thought this would be effective because it would give a sense of how much stuff was in Elsewhere, and to think that this merely a six foot area along the wall of two three-story buildings full of anything and everything.

Smiling Phone.
I found a slew of these rolling smiling phones at Elsewhere, and took a liking to them. Its hard to resist the colorful smiling faces. I really enjoyed the phone booth area, and later decided to map that space out.

Flying Frog??
This was hanging from a line of string spanning the dining area at Elsewhere. Interesting, and very cute!
On one of our morning experiences it was a bit chilly, so a few of us ended up in the front display window catching some heat from the sun. While sitting there I found it appropriate to draw the "N" dangling in my face from a clothes line that said CLOTHESLINE. Very cool interesting, as it was made from fabric cut and glued onto paper.

CHECKERS ANYONE?

In this studio project, Liz Brown and I partnered up to create a marketable way to re-use plastic bottle caps, a very common item around trash dumps. Having both come up with the idea of creating a checkerboard, we ran with it, finally creating a TRAVEL CHECKERS SET.
In order to be as ECO-FRIENDLY as possible, we chose to use an old t-shirt as the sack and board. With the squares screen printed on by a soy based ink, and a natural twine thread around the edges, all your missing is 24 bottle caps!

These are detail drawings from my house! I drew some of my favorite places! The bottom two images are of the stair area, but my focus was on the pocket/hole in the wall above. I love this detail! The top image is of the baseboard of the stairs, with the knot/natural shape of the wood being a very unique focal point! (also one of my favorites) The second drawing down shows the timber-frame of an exterior wall, and the locking pegs. -props to my pops on the architecture! :)

This is the interior entrance to the Jackson Library coming from the Elliot University Center.
I think the drawing turned out very well, and it was very fun and interesting to draw. Upon completion I began to feel like I was finally getting the hang of different hatching techniques! Yay!

Lead Pencil Studio

All of these images are of an exhibit in the Weatherspoon Museum. It is an installation done by the Lead Pencil Studio-a very neat exhibit, might I add. The bottom image is a "re-do" of the one above it. Although I do like it better, I still had a lot of issues with knowing where to put the hatching lines. Some of this, I believe, had to do with the conflict in light source.

[TEN] Buildings + my comments

Nestle Building, Mexico
The new Nestle chocolate factory building was designed by Michel Rojkind. He intended to create somewhat of a museum environment. Both the inside and outside are very interesting. I love the geometric lines and all the angles. I also think the bright red outside is really cool.

Illycafe
The Illycafe is the most unique cafe i have ever seen. Alnog with being portable, it folds out into a very cool modern eatery. When folded it looks like a freight car storage box, but when unfolded it becomes a wonderful place to grab a bite to eat! It was designed by Adam Kalkin for Illy.

Loft Cube
The Loft Cube is designed by Werner Aisslinger. I think it is a very visually appealing way to create a living environment in a compact way, but I am not sure that it is very functional. It is also very modern, but you would have to be a very clean and tidy person that did not have very many belongings to live in a Loft Cube.

Single Hauz
This is a very interesting idea! Front Architects from Poland have created a single person housing unit inspired by a billboard. It is suitable for almost any place you could ever want to have a home, in the water, in the middle of a city, or even in the middle of nowhere. I think this is a genius idea!

Leonardo Glass Cube
This building was designed by 3Deluxe. I think it is very very cool. I love the way the design from the grass and sidewalk is continued on the walls of the building. I think it looks like a net or some kind of web has engulfed it. Very very neat!

Anne Fontaine Spa, Paris
I absolutely LOVE this spa. It looks incredibly relaxing. The design is so modern and sleek. It looks very clean, which I would want and expect from a spa.

Guerrilla Restaurant, New York City
This restaurant was designed by the Rockwell Group. It looks very modern and it is kinda different for a restaurant. There is a big contrast between the white lights and the blue shapes hanging above them. I love the simplicity and cleanliness of the all white tables.

Vikkii Church, Helsinki, Finland
This is the most unique church I have ever seen. It was designed by JKMM Architects after they won a competition for the design of the building. I love how the entire church is made of beautiful woods, and the large window make if appear that you are outdoors, like in a pavilion.

Painted Staircase
This staircase it so cool! I have never seen anything like it. The vertical lines are really amazing to look at. I love the vibrant colors against the white walls. It makes them stand out that much more.

Chelsea Duplex Penthouse
This penthouse was designed by Paul Cha Architect. The whole area is very modern, and think it is a great use of space. I absolutely love the stairs and I want them in my house!

I really like both of these. Even though we were thrown in the water to drown on this one, I think I managed to stay afloat! I really enjoy shading and I think these are both successful. I especially like the top one of the cases.

This is my zine. I actually really like it. I chose to use bathtubs as my product. The title is German for "sitting bath".

In this project the objective was to create 3 intermediates between 2 projects other classmates had designed. I was to chose from Missy Wicker and Megan Schwartz's projects. The image on the bottom has thumbnails of several ideas for the middle model. The first image is of Missy's project. The second one is the mis between that project and the intermediate of the two original projects. The third image is the intermediate, incorporates characteristics of both of the projects, and is pretty equally weighted between the two. The next image has a mix of Megan's project and the middle model. The final model is of course Megan's model.

I really enjoyed this project. I like how we had to build off other ideas, but still come up with our own idea. I think it was my favorite so far!

Elephant Memory

This project was about creating a place to house a memory. My memory was of seeing a very interesting building in Bangkok, Thailand. I was driving by it, so i was very hard to see, and it was irritating. The building itself was very interesting. It was shaped like an elephant with trunk and ears included. I feel like my final product was successful, considering my thoughts of it before I completed the final product. I improved it a lot and now i really like it!

The purple images are f my iteration. I did not like my project at all at this point in my process. I thought it was stupid and that I would never be able to get my point across.

This is my pencil "box". It is made completely of tape, masking and drafting. I sort of stretched the boundaries....only adhesive, markers not pencils, and it is not your typical "box", but I like it!

This is my first iteration. The whole colored paper strip thing just wasn't working out, and the roll of paper was definitely distracting. So, all of that took a trip to the trash! (not really, it's still on my desk.)

My favorite blogs!

I really liked both Andrea Joseph and France Belleville's blogs. They both had a lot of artwork on their web pages, so i didn't get bored, and not too much to overwhelm me. I liked their subject matter because it is the stuff I like to draw/paint, especially Andrea's. I also think Andrea does an exceptional job with shading. It makes her works seem very real and lifelike. The thing about France's works that stands out the most to me, is her use of hatching lines for shading. It makes therm appear almost comic book like, but also very detailed and realistic. Her figures have a lot of expression, and I like that. Overall, I really like both of their styles and hope that someday I can do what they do! I think they are both very talented.
